Two Upcoming Conferences: Privacy Law and Retooling Unions

There are a couple upcoming conferences happening in Toronto that I want to alert people to. Both are happening on November 22, 2013, so you'll have to choose one or the other. It's great to see a renewed interest in workplace law issues in Ontario and the growth of research hubs devoted to the intersection of labour market and legal issues.

The first is being organized by the Centre for Law in the Contemporary Workplace and is entitled "Privacy, Law and the Contemporary Workplace: New Challenges and Directions". The keynote speaker is Elizabeth Denham who is the Information & Privacy Commissioner of British Columbia. There are a series of excellent panels and I would highly recommend this conference to any professionals who need to deal with issues of workplace law. One standout panel features Elizabeth Shilton, Dan Michaluk (from the All About Information blog), and Michael Lynk - these heavy hitters will be covering searches and surveillance at work.

The second conference is being organized by the Centre for Labour Management Relations and is entitled "A New Unionism: Retooling Labour for an Era of iPhones and Individual Rights". This conference is focusing on why organized labour is increasingly marginalized and what steps could be taken to renew it as a political force. There are keynotes talks from Bob Rae and George Smith, beyond this there are a number of interesting panels on being an effective union leader and how unions project their image in Canada. I'm speaking on a panel entitled "Seniority, Flexibility and the Younger Worker - Is It Time to Reconsider Core Values" with John Cartwright, Glenn Wheeler, and Michael O'Reilly - this panel (and the conference itself) has been criticize recently.
