Three face charges in the deaths of four workers from scaffold accident

On December 24, 2009, four men died when the scaffolding they were working on collapsed while working on a North York high-rise. Today three men were arrested and charged with criminal negligence causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm, the names of the accused are: Vadim Kazenelson, Joel Swartz, and Benny Saigh; furthermore, Metron Construction Corporation also faces charges.


The five workers involved in this tragedy were working in a situation that involved: precarious employment, unsafe working conditions, problems with immigration status, and an employer that had been subject to number orders from the Ministry of Labour. This case highlights the risks that workers face on the job site on a day to day basis and the inability of government to properly protect workers who are unaware of their rights.
